High-band variable tilt antennas for emerging and traditional cellular markets
RFS (Radio Frequency Systems), the wireless infrastructure specialist, has taken the wraps off a range of high-band variable tilt antennas designed for premium network performance across a wide range of network topologies.
The APXV18-206516H and APXV18-206517H series, says Remi Deniel, RFS' Area Product Manager for Wireless Infrastructure Solutions, gives carriers access to an antenna design that supports both high performance and energy efficiencies, making it suitable for a wide range of carrier deployments.
The new antenna series, Deniel went on to say, features a new dipole design based on fractal technology that supports superior matching across the entire band, as well as improved antenna radiating geometry for enhanced front-to-back ratio and cross-polarization discrimination.
The antenna radiating geometry technology, he explained, minimizes the contact between elements and so eliminates any intermodulation issues which can typically be found in competing antenna technologies.
The addition of high performance phase shift network technology, he says, supports precise control and stability of all the upper side lobe suppression (USLS) and signal pattern shaping across the entire tilt range. It improves the network key performance indictors in a dense area where minimum interference levels are required.
With a frequency range of 1710 to 2200MHz and an electrical tilt capability of 0 to 10 degrees, married to a horizontal beamwidth of 65 degrees, Deniel says that the new family of antennas is unmatched in the industry.
"The new family of antennas can address a wide range of antenna down-tilts, making it suitable for the large variations in terrain and population densities that one sees in the emerging world," he said.
With both a 1.3 meter (4.1 feet) - gain of 18.1 dBi - and a 1.9 meter (6.3 feet) - gain of 19 dBi - version available, he adds that the new antenna family pushes the efficiency and performance envelope into areas never before seen in the market.
"The balance that the premium antenna strikes between efficiency and performance makes it equally useful for the more traditional markets in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region," he explained.
Legacy support, energy efficiency and environmental issues
The new antennas also adhere to the environmentally friendly company ethos that RFS outlined at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona earlier this year.
RFS is both ISO 9001/14001 compliant and the new antennas feature a number of technology innovations that are in keeping with the green initiatives that the industry is adopting. These include a streamlined production process, reduced soldering points on the chassis and a lightweight design that has been optimized for the lowest possible CO2 emissions on a leading-edge antenna of this type.
The energy efficiencies and support for legacy network topologies on the new antenna family, says Deniel, are backed up by a rigorous accelerated life testing process that assures carriers of enduring product quality in extreme environmental conditions.
"That translates into an antenna range that is more than capable of withstanding severe icing, concentrated salt bombardments in coastal and desert areas, and the heavy moisture plus rainy conditions seen in many emerging wireless markets," he said.
"Earlier incarnations of the RFS Optmizer series have been very successful in regions such as South America, where extreme conditions and highly variable terrain mean that features such as environmental robustness and flexible down-tilts are a must-have for any carrier wanting to effectively serve its customer base in metro, urban and rural areas," he added.
