RFS North America expands production capacity, hires additional staff to meet growing customer demand
Meriden, CT (United States), March 23, 2012 – Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, today announced that it has re-opened its production facility in Wallingford, Connecticut, to better serve its North American customers. The facility will be used for production of RFS’ HYBRIFLEX™ hybrid feeder cables as well as for antenna testing and kitting. Up to 100 people will be hired to work in the revitalized facility.
RFS’ need for the additional 60,000 square feet of production space reflects the company’s success in North America. “Re-opening this facility is a testament to the growth that we’re seeing in both our cable and antenna businesses,” confirms RFS North America President, Ken Farrell. With the additional production capacity, RFS can accelerate delivery of products that help its North American customers address their most pressing challenges.
HYBRIFLEX, in particular, has become extremely popular with RFS customers since it was first announced in 2010. Operators in the United States, Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and Latin America have all successfully trialed the patent-pending hybrid cable. Expanding HYBRIFLEX production in the United States shows RFS’ dedication to bringing the benefits of this unique cable to North American customers.
HYBRIFLEX combines optical fiber and DC power in a single corrugated cable. Its compact and durable design makes it faster, easier and more cost effective to install than bringing both traditional optical fiber and DC power to the antenna. HYBRIFLEX is ideal for connecting power-saving Remote Radio Heads (RRHs), especially where space is constrained. It can be also used for in-building Distributed Antenna Systems (DASs), for microwave backhaul networks and as bundled cables in harsh environments.
To simplify installation and reduce training requirements, HYBRIFLEX uses standard accessories and the same installation methods as other RFS radio frequency (RF) cables. No specialized accessories or knowledge are required. HYBRIFLEX cables can also be customized to meet customers’ specific requirements for fiber, power and length.
Customizing HYBRIFLEX cables to meet customer requirements is one of the key functions of RFS’ Wallingford facility. The facility’s proximity to RFS’ manufacturing and office complex in Meriden, Connecticut, allowed the company to coordinate tasks across the two facilities and to leverage the skill sets and experience of the Meriden team. “Our ability to quickly ramp-up production and customize solutions for our North American customers is crucial,” says Joel Zimmerman, Director of Industrialization for RFS North America. “Our customers are always evolving. We work very hard to ensure that we are also continually evolving to support their needs. We have the Wallingford facility ready to meet the production demands of large OEMs and operators, we have the flexibility to handle any requirements and we can ramp-up production as quickly as our customers need.”
RFS plans to operate the Wallingford facility, located in the Medway business complex, around the clock using three shifts of employees. Whenever possible, RFS provides customers with locally-manufactured products. All of the HYBRIFLEX cables produced at RFS’ Meriden and Wallingford facilities will be shipped to North American customers.
