Metallic Lite Jacket Makes RFS CELLFLEX® Lite Cables Theft Resistant and Reduces Cell Site Ownership Costs
Colombes (France), July 20, 2012 —Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, has introduced a unique “Metallic Lite” cable jacket designed to discourage and virtually eliminate the potential for cable theft from cellular sites. The new aluminum cable jacket is used exclusively on RFS CELLFLEX® Lite low loss feeder cables, one of the key products of the largest corrugated transmission line portfolio in the wireless infrastructure industry.
“The cost of raw material for cellular cables has been very volatile and has risen substantially over the past few years, and this has increased the risk of cable theft from cell sites for mobile network operators,” said Bernd Furche, Vice-President Global Transmission Line Products, RFS. “In many countries, the theft of copper-based cables is a very real threat. When it does occur, it causes service disruptions and significant damage to established infrastructure. This not only increases the total cost of cell site ownership for mobile operators, but also creates subscriber dissatisfaction that often leads to churn. The outer conductor on our CELLFLEX Lite cable is made with aluminum, which is an increasingly attractive alternative to copper because it offers stable raw material prices and predictable costs. It also makes the cable less attractive to thieves looking for copper and prevents theft. Ultimately, all these factors combined reduce an operator’s total cost of ownership for each site.”
The new, exclusive, Metallic Lite cable jacket makes CELLFLEX Lite aluminum cables even more distinguishable from their renowned copper relatives, whether in daylight or when illuminated by artificial light at night. In addition, these cables bear a clearly visible meter marking: “RFS ALUMINIUM” on their jackets, to discourage cable theft. The aluminum makes the cables unattractive to thieves because it has little to no resale value, thereby eliminating the cable as a target for theft.

RFS CELLFLEX Lite foam dielectric feeder cables provide a reliable and technically superior solution when used as backbone feeders in cellular radio systems, including GSM, UMTS, CDMA, PDC, WiMAX, and LTE. In addition, they can be used to cable antenna arrays, radio equipment interconnections and jumper assemblies. The cables are available in a standard, black polyethylene jacket, a grey polyethylene jacket, an optional flame and fire retardant jacket, and the new metallic lite jacket. The metallic lite cable offers clear markings and differentiation to copper cables and the same UV protection as any other colored cable jacket.
