RFS successfully delivers multi-operator wireless in-building coverage solution for Minas Gerais Government in Brazil
Colombes, July 13, 2011 – Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, announced that it successfully delivered 2G and 3G wireless in-building solutions for more than 800,000 square meters of government office space in the city of Belo Horizonte, in the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. This multi-operator project coordinated by Vivo is the largest wireless in-building coverage implementation in the country with already six months in operation.
The project spans the five buildings at the new Administrative Center of the Government of Minas Gerais (CAMG*) complex, a center that unifies the State’s public organs in one unique place and that received investments of more than 1 billion reals from the regional Government.
RFS’ solution will ensure that the 17,000 employees and the 5,000 to 10,000 daily visitors to the complex will enjoy uninterrupted wireless coverage. This represents a voice and data traffic comparable to that of an indoor city that would have more than 25,000 inhabitants. An additional significant technical challenge raised from the fact that the Minas Gerais buildings were designed by renowned Brazilian architect and master of reinforced concrete Oscar Niemeyer, and include the world’s largest cantilever structure built with reinforced concrete.
To fulfill the stringent wireless indoor coverage requirements of this titanic project, RFS installed more than 500 of its indoor antennas, 40 of its optical repeaters and 30 km of its CELLFLEX® Lite aluminum corrugated coaxial cables.
The project was coordinated by Vivo, which made the first contacts with the State’s Government in order to show the need of equipment that assured complete coverage in the complex. RFS was then selected after a joint bidding process organized by the four main Brazilian mobile operators. On this occasion, all operators joined their forces to provide a shared high-quality indoor coverage solution, transparently spanning the cellular systems of the four companies.
“It was a real challenge to combine the signals from four operators and distribute them throughout the whole administrative center inside one single communications system, as requested by the Government. In spite of the complexity and the dimension of the installation, the project has been implemented with success, with minimum visual impact, minimum investments, and minimum renting cost, which was made possible with a model in which the operators united and managed the negotiations together”, observed Paulo Matos, Director for engineering and networks at Vivo.
Oi highlighted that the four operators have worked together to elaborate an optimized project that fully fulfilled the needs for mobile coverage inside the Administrative City and its surroundings.
According to Fábio Costa, manager of the project at TIM: “A union of operators is a model that is becoming natural. The implementation of projects like this one is part of a growing movement. Different shopping and commercial centers have already been executed using this model, and TIM itself already used this model for the Sao Paulo metro coverage”, he explains.
Marcos Worbel, Sales Director for RFS Latin America, added: “Even though RFS is a market leader in supplying and executing shared indoor projects, this Brazilian project was one of the most challenging projects with indoor solutions for the company worldwide.” He concluded: “Besides using an optical repeaters hybrid solution and passive cabling and antennas systems to cover the whole complex, the biggest challenge was to combine all the technologies and operators into one unique RF distribution system, and we succeeded!”
