Signal consistency
5G is ideal to support communications with moving vehicles. But it can be very difficult to ensure each vehicle receives a consistent signal at all times. 5G signals can be blocked by buildings and other obstacles, which can interfere with the signal path to vehicles if measures are not taken to overcome the issue.
Continuous connectivity
Public events and large gatherings in cities put spontaneous, high demands on wireless networks. These sudden spikes in demand can lead to unexpected connectivity slowdowns and connection failures that can put cellular communications to moving vehicles at risk. If safety-critical vehicle systems lose connectivity , peoples’ lives could be in danger.
Legacy equipment
Many currently deployed base station antennas can’t deliver the performance and reliability needed for V2X communications. To reduce the risk connections to in-vehicle systems will be too slow or dropped altogether, these legacy antennas must be replaced with more advanced models that are designed and tested to ensure performance won’t degrade as network load increases.

5G and V2X
Industry organizations, such as the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), believe 5G is essential for mission-critical V2X communications:
- 5G provides the speed, reliability, low latency and capacity needed for real-time communications with other vehicles, city infrastructure, personal devices and cloud systems
- 5G is expected to connect smart urban infrastructure ranging from parking meters, traffic signals, street lights and outdoor furniture to video surveillance systems
Sustained Antenna Performance
To ensure reliable communications to land vehicles on-the-move for many years, base station antennas must optimize every apect of performance and maintain those performance levels over the long term. Antennas must be engineered and thoroughly tested to:
