The model HF28B-S is a versatile and rugged whip antenna for use in HF transmitting and receiving applications. The antenna is designed for short-distance transmission using ground waves, and medium to long-distance transmission via ionospheric propagation The HF28B-S can withstand severe environmental conditions, and the low wind loading of this antenna makes it ideal for mounting to a wide range of structures.
It is supplied in two sections for assembly during installation. The top section is a tapered fibreglass whip and the lower section is made from heavy-duty marine anodised aluminium tubing with a hot-dipped galvanised base. Its overall length is 8.5 meters (28 ft).
An electrical connection terminal is provided underneath the antenna. The antenna is required to be mounted vertically above a suitable ground plane, such as the metallic deck of a ship or a suitable ground radial system when mounted over soil.
With the use of an appropriate antenna tuning unit (ATU) the antenna can be used within the frequency range of 1.5 MHz to 30 MHz.
